Conclusion of reasearch of similar products

Overall, both our production idea and the productions of ‘Line of Duty’ and ‘The girl with the Dragon tattoo’ convey similarities. They all fall in the thriller genre which we can use to our advantage to gain some inspiration in terms of our opening title sequence. Having our film contain the convections of the thriller genre will be to our advantage as it will draw in a better, more targeted audience. We can use close up, shot duration shots and place them in a montage like in ‘Line of Duty’ to help exaggerate the thriller atmosphere and to create tension and action for the audience. The dark undertones that are used in the opening sequence of ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ can also be used for inspiration in our opening title sequence. However, there are also differences portrayed in our opening sequence idea compared to the movies that I have researched. The female character in ‘The Girl in the dragon tattoo’ defies all gender stereotypes and in our production idea, the female main character would conform to the typical female stereotypes in terms of aesthetics. Although, their characteristics suggest similarities in terms of personalities. In terms of comparing ‘The Girl with the dragon tattoo’ and ‘Line of Duty’, in ‘Line of Duty’, the entire concept is about taking down criminals whereas in ‘The girl with the Dragon tattoo’ the plot follows a woman hunting down a missing girl which shows how all thriller movies can contain main convections yet differ in plot and styles. In conclusion, I can take inspiration from both these films in my opening sequence to make it more visually appealing and to comply with the thriller genre.

Research into filming roles

Before our shoot day we assigned each member of our crew a specific role that would be a guide for our shoot day and also for our post production work we decided that Maddie would take the wall of the director Bashy would take the world of the camera up and I would take the role of the editor. However these worlds weren't strictly set in stone they were just there as a guideline to make the shoot day less complicated and more structured even though people were assigned roles everyone had a go at everything and we worked as a team to make a ask me this possible.

A director's role and set:

Our directors role is to give direction to not only the crew but also the actors they have the final say on what happens on the shoot and what shots will be taken However they don't just strictly tell everyone what to do everyone communicates with the director I'm worked together to create a positive environment. The director has overall in charge of the shoot and they are there to call action and cut When they feel the shot should start and end. they are the ones who are mainly in control.

A cameraman role on set:

A cameraman's roll is to be in charge of the camera they're the ones who operationalised the camera press record and press stop they work closely with the director to help compose shots and give guidance on what looks good and what doesn't. They are also the ones that will set up the camera equipment for example the tripod get the camera levelled and they will be in constant communication with the director to get the best out of the shoot.

The editor's role:

The editors don't always stay on set sometimes they may be there to have an idea of what the film its intentions are and to give an idea of how they want to edit the film but they are mainly involved in the post production they are the ones who review all the footage and decide what goes into the film. they are the ones that cut and stick all the frames together and are the ones who pull the film into one.

the reason that I have been chosen undecided to be editor is that I really enjoyed doing the editing for our test shoot and for our dialogue workshop I really liked using the software and enjoyed spending my time working on the finished product and making it look smooth and well put together. For the shoot I closely observed each shot and asked for there to be a delay before action and cut was called to allow me some breathing room when it came to editing. My role as an editor is really important as I am the one who well make sure all are filming and shots Are well formed and put together in a way that is understanded by the audience. The way that I put the sequence together will determine how it will be seen and it's really important that it runs really smoothly and it's clear to the audience what is going on within the opening sequence this all comes down to the way that I edit the final piece. On our shoot day we needed to make sure that we had enough footage an enough option for us to choose form in our final edit we did this by making sure we had multiple shots and angles for each section of the opening sequence As it would be really bad if we turned up in the edit and we had less footage than we needed and it's always better to have more than less. In terms of conveying our genre in the edit we will add a soundtrack over the top to create tension and the thriller feel we are yet to decide what music we will put over the top however we know we want it to build suspense and build up to the final scene. and also in terms of editing we want to have the end shot done in more action so this may means having short duration shots to keep the seen fast pace and keep the audience engaged. For our audience we want them to feel suspense and tension we want it to build up to the final moment where the killer and the detective meet we want to make the audience feel on edge an uneasy we want to convey this feeling through our sound and music.

dialoge workshop

Preparing for our dialogue sequence we got into groups and we started to discuss what we wanted our short sequence to include and we came up with a basic storyline through our other workshops we have picked up a lot of skills that we put together to create a professional looking sequence for example when setting up our camera equipment on our tripod and our microphone we went through step by step and put up successfully we then went to position our camera looking at rule of thirds and also the 180 degree rule by doing the workshops in previous weeks allowed us to do this smoothly and also correctly.

things that I would have done differently is that our idea that we used for opening sequence was a police interview and we thought that we would use the microphone as a prop however looking back now we probably shouldn't have done this in the way we did we should have kept the microphone we were doing the audio for separately and use a separate prop for the microphone in the shot as this made the audio not as consistent and not as clear.

this process taught us that planning carefully is very important and really thinking about the process and how we're going to do it as time is an endless and we ended up having to rush them things as we didn't properly think them out beforehand we've taken this opportunity to develop our skills so we in the future can work more efficiently as a team.

When editing our sequence we all worked really well as a team and also used skills from our editing workshop to make the process run smoothly we all had to go on editing individually and together we were able to add our own ideas and we bounced off each other really well giving us a well edited and professional looking video.

We looked at all the clips that we had shot we chose the ones that we thought had the most potential and we dragged them into the timeline we had to eliminate clips that weren't quite level or the camera composition wasn't to a high standard we took clips out if they were a little bit out of focus we did this price as until we found the clips that we thought worked the best and looked the best together this really helped us refresh our memory on our editing workshop and we also learned new skills along the way for example some more shortcuts and key terminology. it definitely wasn't all perfect we did make a few mistakes but they were well corrected in time again going back to the point of the microphone we didn't have the best audio we had to make do of what we had however going forward we know this is something that we need to improve and we will do for next time. another thing that we could improve on is not rushing there's no need to make the process faster than it needs to be taking your time is really important and it definitely shows in the end result so next time when we go to edit our real opening sequence I need to remember that speed isn't the most important thing and what matters is that you produce a professional looking opening sequence that is engaging to your audience

When we go to actually approach our real opening sequence we have definitely learned a lot of tricks and ways to make the process run smoothly this workshop in particular has giving us a good idea of things that we need to improve on and things that we will continue to do it helped us a lot in terms of developing our skills to then come up with the best opening sequence possible.

TV show

Movie

  • Salt (it was directed by Phillip Noyce it was produced Columbia pictures by the cast stared Angelina Jolie, Liev Schreiber, Daniel Olbrych ski, August Diehl, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. It made $293.5 million, and its budget was $110–130 million.

The genre of our opening sequence is a crime thriller although this is predominantly a thriller there is some elements of action throughout for example our end scene. Within a crime thriller there's lots of suspense and tension created as that is what thrill isn't known for they are Very dramatic and gripping the reason that it's a crime thriller is the cause of the role of the detective and how the rest of the film would play out it's more based around the detective than the killer.

When looking at similar products of our opening sequence I decided that line of duty was a similar TV show that fitted the genre and theme of the opening sequence in terms of films that have similar styles to our opening sequence is salt that was directed by Philip Noyce and girl with the Dragon Tattoo that was directed by David Fincher.

The TV show line of duty Came out in 2012 and has recently been a huge success the series is about a police officer who did a home invasion that went wrong and killed the wrong person he then gets sent to a special forces group within the police force who investigate police officers and police units that are corrupt, and each episode gives a different story of a corrupt police officer within the force. The whole TV show doesn't necessarily completely correlate with our opening sequence however individual episodes definitely show similar themes and a similar style to what we were going for in our opening sequence. As well as the narrative doesn't exactly run in parallel with what we were doing however there are specific scenes and moments within line of duty that really fit with what we are trying to convey Especially the stuff that was out of the Police Department when they would go on missions and go into other people's houses that's where ours and there's showed most similarity. In terms of setting and location in our opening sequence it was all based in the killer's house and even though our detective was a detective there was no visual of where she is based for example a police officer headquarters It was all based in the killer's house, and this runs along with similar ideas from line of duty when they would go into other people's houses unlock around them.

The movie the girl with the dragon tattoo came out in 2011 it was directed by David Fincher. It is a about a girl who is hired. To help the investigation of his missing niece. However, when she turns up it's not what they expected she goes agates all the stereotypes for women. The big difference the main characters are they way they look in our opening scene she looks stereotypically of what a female detective looks like she is in a smart suit and has her special officers' badge however the girl in the girl with the dragon tattoo goes against all female stereotypes she walks into the office building in all black she is cover in pricings and casual clothes. The other difference is the location the and are sequences based again within a serial killers house and in the countryside and in the garden the Dragon Tattoo they are based in the city and within office buildings. however they do follow a similar narrative they are both female lead detectives and they both are involved within the police and solving investigations however the goblet Dragon Tattoo is more based around the person that went missing and one specific investigation and in terms of our opening sequins is more about the detective and all the things that she solves. change the nature of each opening sequence within the girl with the dragon tattoo they are more short duration shots as not much suspense is being built and it's based around her and revelling what she looks like and when it comes to our opening sequence the short duration is a little bit longer and the music is more suspenseful building up to one specific moment of when the detective kills the murderer. so in terms of different editing styles as a more long duration shots and have more suspenseful music playing over the top.

test shoot reflection

During our test shoot we realised a lot of things about our shoot at it enabled us to come up with new ideas and also take out ideas that this wasn't going to work. We worked really well as a group and we managed to get round can be struggled of having one a crew member down. This allowed us to learn and adapt and get to grips with any struggles that may come about on the day.

We believe that we got the Best replica we could from the real thing. However it was really difficult to get all our ideal shots and due to the camera being so light some of our shots are not as clear and well composed. When we went to edit we did realise that our opening title sequence was under the two minute bracket how weather you feel like this won't affect us as there are many more shots we want to include that is within our location that we just didn't have accessible to us at the time. There was also a few long gaps that were a little bit too long they got a tad boring by the end of the shot and it was a little bit predictable on what was going to happen so I think in the future we're going to chop up these bits with cut away shots of our location to break up the longer shots.Within the edit we didn't add any music over the top of it so the tension that would have been created was lacked and as well as the location we were filming our test shoot in didn't have all the corridors and rooms that we would have in our true location. This looking around in and out of rooms well how cars create tention.

Due to the limited time that we had the location for we didn't really think too much about la camera angles and completion and we mainly looked at what shots we could do and laying out our opening sequence as best as possible so therefore all camera competition was a consequence this and it wasn't the best some of the close ups and mid shots were muddled and I think this would confuse the audience on what is going on. I believe that our idea was clear to the viewer however we kept on a few things to make it extra clear, and this would be included sharper editing for me and a few more cut away shots of the location however these we lacked due to where we were.

There are definitely more shots that we want to include add more techniques for example handheld camera and using tracking shots in more detail we also want to take our time and really get our shots clear and well-focused and well composed within the screen and we just did not have the time for this during our shoot and it showed in our final edit.

I'll test you really helped us to work out the logistics and the detail of our final shoot we were able to plan out a floor plan and where everything is going to be placed and where the detector was going to walk beforehand, we didn't have this completely clear. Before the test shoot I was struggling to visualise our shoot and it was worrying me a lot and after our test you I can really get to grips of what we have to do and what we're going to do to make it the best that we possibly can and I'm now able to have a vision of what it's going to look like this wouldn't have been possible unless we didn’t do our shoot.

Things that worked well was we really liked the walking into the house with the feet stepping in and the close up on the face we felt like this went really well in the test shoot. However, all of this is a rough draft and there's a lot of things that we need to improve on and get correct for the real thing.

In conclusion I think that we did really well for what we had we managed to layout everything we wanted to do and with the time that we did it gives us confidence that on the day we will have plenty of time to complete our opening sequence another really good thing is that we worked really well together and we were able to move around all the issues we had and we adapted and it turned out really well obviously this fun idea is not what we want our opening sequence to look like it's just a basis for us to work off and it gave us an understanding of what our final sequence may look like and what we need to do to improve it and we all are on the right track too making this the best we can.

test shoot

test shoot plan

 test shoot plan

The idea that we chose as a group is all about a strong and powerful female lead character who is a detective and goes against the stereotypes of women in the police force it's based as an American detective who finds a boy who has been attacked and is informed that the attacker is still roaming the house. She then starts moving around the house and in the end defines the attacker and shoots him down. Our opening sequence is a thriller/crime Genre.

As one of our members of our crew was ill we had to adapt and use Someone to replace him for our test shoot. We had the attacker played by Callum and we had the detective played by me and Maddie was the camera man instead of using the gun we used a juice box instead and for the knife we used a board marker.

As are location is off campus instead, we used the common room and instead of having the corridors and stairs we used the chairs and tables as substitutes. We have also taken into consideration how this will affect some of our shots for example the shots of they just active walking upstairs as we don’t have this accessible.

Due to our limited crew We are only having one person behind the camera and using me and someone else asked the cast we doing it this way round two give us a better understanding of how our shoot day will work. For the moment we would prefer to have more actors rather than more people behind the camera.

editing workshop 1

The software that we use is adobe premier pro this software is used around the world it is used for extremely small-scale productions as well as for massive conglomerate companies. in this editing software not only can you edit video, but you can also edit audio, and this is a very good piece of software.

There are many shortcuts when it comes to editing your films for example there are shortcuts for saving for cutting for starting a short and for clicking undo. In terms of undo, you can click command Z which will delete the last thing you've done for saving your project you can click command S this will give you the most updated project saved. For cutting section out of your video you play the clip you want to edit, and you click I for in so that's when the bit you want to start and then you click O for out and that's where the clip will cut. The in and out points all that to show you when your clip will start and when your clip will end once you have decided where these points will be you drag you add to clip into the timeline this is where he will see your final film and from there you can make adjustments of the cut by using a bracket tool. Your timeline is where you can see all the sections you have edited together and this is where we will put all the clips in order.

Before you select clips to edit that are things could rushes and this is a big folder where all your clips are kept Or in other terms where all your footage is kept this is where all the clips from the memory card will fall into and from there you double click on the clips that you want and then drag them up into the top window. You can create other folders outside of your rushes to organise all your rushes

here is a small edited sequence i did to put our learnt skills into practice:
