180 degree workshop

180-degree workshop with Matt

180 degree rule also known as crossing the line is used so the audience is aware were everyone is and where the action is taking place.
the directer will work out what side of the shot the actors will be placed. A line will then be positioned between them and a semi circle the 180 degrees will be were the camera will shoot from. this is done so the actors are always facing the wright direction.

This is key to any scene within a film specifically scenes with dialogue it is vital thats this rule stays in place throughout the entire film other wise the audience can become disoriented and complicated to the eye. it can distract you from what is going on within the scene as you are constantly trying to figure out who is were and who there talking to this can take away the suspense and the tension that would have been created.

Camera Composition Workshop

Matts workshop wright up

In Thursday's lesson matt did a camera composition workshop, he talked about the rule of 3rds, camera hight, depth and lighting.

Rule of 3rds – when you have camera shot of a subject on the screen think about the screen as a grid 3 horizontal lines and 3 vertical lines this is a way to break u your shot and rearrange it to make it more interesting for the audience. For example, by having your line of interest positioned on were the lines cross gives more to the shot than having every shot with the subject dead centred.

Camera hight – bring the camera to the hight of the subject so you can see it in a more realistic view

Depth – giving the shot depth makes the shot a lot more enjoyable to watch having something happening or shown in the background not only make it more interesting to watch but it can also give the shot some context there for you audience has a further understanding on what is going on. Also makes the shot more realistic as in day-to-day life you aren't walking around with a wight screen behind you.

Lighting – it is very important that you shots are well lit so you can see everything that is going on its also important to switch u the lighting to keep it interesting for the audience but also relate real life and giving the audience context for example the time of day.

independent research: swat team tactics

SWAT Team Research

In my production group one of our ideas involves a SWAT team invasion so I thought for my research post I would research on how a SWAT team enters a building and the reasons why they would do so.

A SWAT is a carefully selected team of usually 24 people that are a part of the law enforcement, they go through a different type of specialised training and they are assigned to very dangerous and critical cases where it may not be safe for a normal law enforcement officer to attend. SWAT team stands for Special Weapons And Tactics.

SWAT team is and American term and that is what they are called in America the UK equivalent is commonly refed to as a firearms unit, as in the UK police officers don’t carry around guns their protection consists of a Batton that can also be called a truncheon and a pepper spray, not all police carry around a taser as you must receive specialist training to do so.

SWAT teams also were very protective clothing, things they may were include
  • weather - proof trousers
  • weather - proof jacket
  • weather - proof shirt
  • Helmet
  • body armour
  • assault webbing
  • eye gear
  • gloves knee pads
  • harness

Things a SWAT team would carry around:

  • Assault rifles
  • Submachine guns
  • Carbines
  • Shotguns
  • Stringers
  • Tear gas
  • Grenades
  • Flash bangs

There are three main roles in a SWAT team, rifle man, negotiator, and entry officer. SWAT teams are usually there to help Somone who is being held hostage or to catch people involved in illegal drugs activity.

How a hostage scenario would work:
  • First of all they have every right to charge down the door and break in
  • However before that the seal of the building or all surrounding areas so it gives the guy only one way out.
  • Then The assigned negotiator would try and find out what the person holding the hostage wants
  • The SWAT team want to make it a peaceful outcome were no one gets harmed

comparing opening titles

Comparing title sequences

Greece And American horror story

Greece was released on the 14th of September 1978 it was directed by Randal Kleiser and it was produced by paramount pictures.
The grease opening tittle sequences is very vibrant and bold, and the music is upbeat and happy. The sequence starts with a voice over of someone talking about the first day of school, this suggests gives us a hint of the setting and location of the movie. The entire opening sequences is animated suggesting that the characters are over the top and carry bold personalities. The long shots on the characters animated profiles allows the audience to build an idea of what they might be like and the actors and what they play again the caricature image of them really allows the audience to play into there characters. they also could symbolise year book pictures further suggesting the school and teen vibe.

there is also within the opening title sequence hints to the era it was set in for example the image of Elvis Presley who was a famous singer in the 1950s this suggests that the movie is set in that time period which also can help create the atmosphere of the film. The fun and bright animated style clips all adhere to the iconic 1950s pop culture in the USA. this all gives hints to the tone and atmosphere of the film.

We can also tell by the opening sequence that the characters play into their stereotypes, the blond, blue eyed girl waking up already looking perfect with her hair and makeup done she gets up with ease. Compared to the first boy we see with a messy room hair in his face and struggles to get up. All playing into the classic stereotypes.

The rest of the sequences the other important roles are reviled in the making of and the rest of the main characters. These are shown on billboards around the city it is set in allowing the audience to establish the location of the film. This is done through continuous transitions; you can also see the characters in the cars at the bottom on the screen suggesting they are a part of a friend group. at the very end of the sequence you see the cars pull up to school and then it fades into unanimated.

American horror story season 1 was released on 5th of October 2011, it was directed by Ryan Murphy and it was produced by FX
American horror story opening sequence is very dark It sets a dark and mysterious tone, seems like it is set in a basement there are many shot duration clips and flashing images which makes it hard for the audience to really know what is going on these clips are interrupted with momentary flashing bright lights to almost obscure the audience's visions leaving them in suspense of what they are going to see next. Images of creepy dolls and baby's and unknown things in jars sets a disturbing tone.

the font is thick and bold its gothic like it almost jumped out at you it is very bold and in your face you can see it very clearly and it also comes in with added audio to give it some life about it and the fun also has a transition out it sort of blotches and fades out which gives it a creepy feel. You can instantly tell that this is going to be a horror genre with the dark themes the visuals are very jumpy the sound has no lyrics and it has a very creepy undertone it's sort of makes you feel all jittery and on edge giving it that horror feel

From the onset that isn't very dark tone over the imagery and the way it's been cut and edited makes the audience feel something it's very clear that the storyline is going to be probably quite morbid and include a lot of horror. The time period that this film would have been set in is hard to sort of tell from the opening sequence as you don't see a lot it's very hard to fixate on one thing there's a lot going on at once it's hard to sort of tell where this is taking place you can sort of guess that it's going to be in a basement type location but this doesn't really give you a date and time this would be set up however what you can see it sort of gives an old fashioned medicine type feel it sort of gives off the impression that this is maybe an older person however it's definitely hard to judge. From what you can see there were no characters introduced you see pictures on the wall of babies and things like that but there's no actual person there in shot all the time so it's hard to sort of gauge on who the the person might be but you can get a good idea of their surroundings and what's being shown.

in terms of these two opening sequence side by side they are very good in establishing what genre they are and as you can tell they are extremely different polar opposites in fact that is good music going on you can see that it's a group of friends that were going to school it's set in the 60s you can tell by their fashion who they are as characters however in the second one it's the complete opposite it's very dark everything's a bit in the unknown the titles are done in a completely different way you can tell it's full of horror and it's got themes of grimness the music is very jittery and hasn't got a consistent pattern. In terms of which opening sequence I believe showed their genre in there best way I think the first one gives you and shows you a lot about what the film is going to entail you meet all the characters you instantly know a lot about their personalities you can understand what age they are you can understand what relationships they have with each other you also get a feel of what the location they are in the city it tells you a huge amount of what you are about to watch and I think paired with the cartoons and the music really shows the audience a huge amount in great detail.

However, these are not all of these are used all the time only the main people involved are always there depending on the film it varies each time, but they usually include 21 films.

One of the primary functions of a title sequences is to set the tone of the movie you are about to see. It presents the tittle and key production and cast members, utilising conceptual visuals and sound.

Creative aspect of a title sequence:
  • Font/style
  • Colours
  • Framing/screen placement
  • Pace of credits, transitions and edit

concept idea 2: thriller

Opening sequence outline:

hitman goes to his post box to revive his letters; the whole Idea is that he receives his contracts through the post and on each letter, there is a number in the bottom left-hand corner that when he types up the number, he receives all information about the person he is set to kill. In terms of the opening sequence, it will show him walking u and collecting the mail and then show him typing up the number into his commuter slowly and like glitch revelling that his next victim is to be his sister, then the camera will show his sister in the room with him.

Movie outline:

A money-stricken Hitman receives a request that hits close to home. He is faced with keeping his own family above water however keeping them afloat is causing him to tear apart other relations and is forced into a huge decision.

concept idea 3: action

Movie idea

After an incident one man is left with a lot on his shoulders he has forgotten his past and can only see into the future. He tries to warn the world what is going to happen only for people to ignore him and tell him he is crazy. Yet they will all end up regretting not listening.

Opening sequence outline:

A guy is in a prison fight and he passes out on his bed and the next thing he remembers is walking out of the prison gate freed stands outside the prison confused on why he is there not knowing why the people who are collecting him are there and to him as he can't remember the past, he doesn't know who his family are and as they are trying to talk to him he is trying to warn them of what is going to happen to them

concept idea 1: horror

opening sequence:

I would like the opening sequence to be set out as more of a documentary type set up. With a person sitting in a chair and in between clips of them talking about the family and their relations with them and how much they liked them. Clips will interrupt them with footage of them killing the family.

Outline of the film:

Friends of an unsolved murdered family comes together to tell the story of their loved ones. A dark side to one of the family's closest friend is revelled and leaves the rest fearing or the lives as this person is still to be revelled as speculation circles the tension is heightened.

Research into Film Making Areas

Production – Is the making of the film (Pre-production, Production, Post-production)

For example, Clueless came out in 1950 it was directed and written by Amy Heckerling it stared Alicia Silverstone, Stacey Dash, Brittany Murphy, Paul Rudd, Wallace Shawn it was produced by 20th Century Fox the budget for the film was $12 million and it made $56.6 million. It was adapted from the book Emma by Jane Austin and then into a TV program and then adapted into a movie which was part of pre-production. The film had a 40-day shooting schedule, they had many hiccups along the way many if the cast were unwell during the shoot and the film had to be changed quite a lot according. The director sat classes Beverly Hills High School to get the feel for the updated student culture. In post-production there was 15 different songs added to the film.

Marketing – the way the production company tells the consumers about the film for example they will release trailers and posters.

There were two trailers that came out for clueless the movie was made in 1995. The film was the 32nd highest grossing film in 1995. The iconic costumes of the film also bought in attention from a younger audience. The clothing from the film inspired Donatella Versace's 2018 clothing collection. A comic book was also launched following the movie.

Clueless came out on July 19, 1995, it quickly became the number one film in the country that day. In a matter of days I generated $10.6 million dollars. The movie is said to have made $105.7 million dollars with a production budget of $12 to $13 million

Distribution and exhibition

Distribution – distribution is the prosses that takes place for the audience to be able to watch the film

On December 19th 1995 clueless was released on Laser Disc and VHS by paramount home video. It was then further released on DVD on October 19 1999. On the DVD the special features included two theatrical trailers. The film is also available on Netflix and Amazon Instant video.

Exhibition – how was the film showed off

Paramount pictures are a part of Viacom which also owns MTV at the time so they were able to exhibit the film on there before its release. The move also exhibited its self through its fashion is heavily influenced the 90s and 2000s this played a huge role in there sucsess.
