research into a small independent studio

Belstone Pictures

Finn Cardigan Bruce

After leaving Hurtwood he set out to make his own production company, this is when he founded Belstone Pictures. He wanted to share story's that were inspirational and spellbinding. He started to work on shows like Downtown Abby, Top Gear and the X Factor to build his reputation on set and to gain experience. in 2016 is when he started to really focus in on the company he had created and has since released successful films.

They currently have 2 movies out, Tucked (2018) , Tank 432 (2016) and Tracks is due to come out this year (2020).

In pre-production Belsone have United Shrine Taylor Traveler Film (Biopic),  United Festival Documentary (behind the scenes documentary), Broken Cove (Historical Drama), Room 17 (Romantic Drama) and Cats In Hell (Black Comedy).

Advantages of being a small institution:

  • smaller crew which means cheeper costs
  • as they are a small company they haven't got large reputations attached to them which allows them to be more experimental and do things out of normal standard
Disadvantages to being a small Institution:
  • they have a small budget due to being independent
  • Because they are yet to build a reputation they are less likely to have people coming to see there movies
  • they are unable to afford big names and stars, less practical effect and CGI for cinema experience

research into a big film institution

 Warner Brothers Studios

Warner Brothers studios was first founded by 4 brothers Albert Warner, Harry Warner, Samual Warner and Jack Warner this is how the company got its name. the company was founded in 1903 this is were they opened there first theatre The Cascade, this was located in New Castle, Pennsylvania. This building was die to be demolished however they talked the owner out of it and they kept it. Three of the older brothers first had the idea as they would bring a movie projector to the mining towns of Ohio and play the movies. The opened their first ever Warner Brothers Studios on Sunset Boulevard in HollyWood.

Mies-En-Scene Film Poster

Film Poster

The titanic is a fictitious love story based around the tragic maiden voyage of the RMS Titanic. The film was released on the 18th of November 1997. The movie was directed by James Cameron and it was produced by paramount pictures. The two main characters are (Jack) Leonardo DiCaprio and (Rose) Kate Winslet as we can see in the poster. The budget was 200,000,000 and it made 2.195 billion.

The two photos merged show the location of the movie and the love interest which are the two main concepts of the movie. The water splashing over the sides of the boat shows interference this suggest it may be an important part of the movie plus a turning point in the movie. The background of the poster is a very pale colour or with blue skies and clouds, the pale colouring shows they are pure and innocent love. The blue skies and clouds suggest their relationship is heavenly and dreamy along with that they almost appear as angles which follows the tragic story line. The fact this is the background could suggest that there was a change in the story line and it’s a reflection of the past. This is also suggested by the way they are almost blending into the background continuing the idea of wanting to go back to a simpler time. The black ship is a major contrast to the pale background, with the colour or black suggesting, death, power, evil and the unknown this contradicts the pale background which we associate with purity, light, innocence and faith as opposed to black white usually has a positive connotation. The dark colours highlight the love storyline on a tragic journey.

The bow of the ship is forcing its way up between them like it's demanding them apart and causing them to separate. There is also a shadow cast on the side of the boat were Leo’s character is and the sun is shining on the side of the boat were Kate's character is this could show that Kate's character had it easy the sun was always shinning and Leo side of the boat was a lot less glamours and he had to work for what he had. The boat is also central to the poster which shows that it is the centralised concept and the location of the movie. The text written on the boat “nothing on earth could come between them” this Is almost like the boat is saying that not even I could break them apart. The text at the front also implies that there is a love story between the two main characters. This also indicates the effort required to be together and the fight for their relationship despite their class difference. The two main characters in the movie are Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio you can see these on the front of the poster this shows that the movie is based around them and their story.

You can also tell by what they are wearing what class they are from; Kate's character is wearing a blue lace dress/top and she's wearing diamond earrings that are shining in the light which shows her wealth it also shows that she is of a higher status, the way she is looking away from him also shows this. Leo’s character is wearing a plain white shirt which could suggests he is of lower status as its very simple and he isn't wearing any glamorous jewellery so the poster is demonstrating the class divide that existed at the time it was portraying. The photo of them on the poster has Kate's character looking away from him this could mean that she doesn't want to be seen with him and he is holding on to her showing that he doesn't want to let go of their relationship. The title of the film is also central, and the name “TITANIC” instantly links us to the true story of the Titanic which the movie is based on the ship's maiden voyage. This directly tells us a huge amount about the movie as the story of the Titanic is so widely known and understood. The poster also displays what else the director has directed, and it notifies the consumer what kind of movie they will be watching.

My Favourite Film

The movie I chose was ‘Mumma Mia’, this movie was my childhood go to and still is to this day this movie holds a lot of memories for me as I go sailing in Greece every year and there's never an evening without this movie playing In the background. Last year when me and my friends were in Greece, we went to see the movie in an open roof theater, and it was one of the best nights of my life without doubt we had so much fun and it’s a night I will never forget. The movie was released on July 18th 2008, Mumma Mia 2 has since been released however I believe the first movie is better in my opinion even though I really liked the second movie I don’t think anything can beat the original. ‘Mumma Mia’ was produced by universal studios and it was filmed Skópelos Greece, however Meryl Streep recorded ‘winner takes it all’ in Stockholm Sweden and finished it in one take, Benny Andersson a former ABBA member called Meryl “a miracle’. I felt the movie had quite a few main characters all with very strong and individual personalities the main cast included; Amanda Seyfried (Sophie), Meryl Streep (Donna), Stellan Skarsgard (Bill), Pierce Brosnan (Sam), Colin Firth (Harry), Julie Walters (Rosie), Christine Baranski (Tanya). Another reason why I love Mumma Mia is the music, I really like ABBA and some of my favorite songs from the movie are ‘our last summer’ ‘slipping through my fingers’ and ‘Thank you for the music’. My favorite scene in the movie must be when Donna is helping Sophie ready for her wedding it reminds me a lot of the relationship I have with my mum, the song always makes me tear up. My favorite character is Sophie as I feel as I relate to her character the most I really enjoy watching her character develop throughout the movie. This movie is also my dream I really want to travel and explore as much of Greece as I can it's my favorite country and there is so much more I want to see. The movie was directed by Phyllida Lloyd, she is most known for ‘Mumma Mia’ and ‘The Iron Lady’ she had also directed ‘Gloriana’ (2000) and ‘Herself’ (2020). ‘Mumma Mia’ became the highest grossing movie ever in the UK over taking the previous record set by the ‘Titanic’ (1997), ‘Avatar’ (2009) has now beaten the record. In conclusion I will always love this movie and all the memories that come along with it, it never fails to make me laugh and cry I cant fault it.
