180 degree rule also known as crossing the line is used so the audience is aware were everyone is and where the action is taking place. 

the directer will work out what side of the shot the actors will be placed. A line will then be positioned between them and a semi circle the 180 degrees will be were the camera will shoot from. this is done so the actors are always facing the wright direction. 

This is key to any scene within a film specifically scenes with dialogue it is vital thats this rule stays in place throughout the entire film other wise the audience can become disoriented and complicated to the eye. it can distract you from what is going on within the scene as you are constantly trying to figure out who is were and who there talking to this can take away the suspense and the tension that would have been created.
